ACADEMIC JOURNEY

At Lochinver House, we know that true academic growth happens in many forms. That is why our co-curricular programme is an essential part of each pupil’s academic journey. From coding clubs to debate teams, eco-initiatives to entrepreneurial challenges, pupils are encouraged to apply their learning in exciting and creative contexts.

These wider opportunities help children consolidate their skills, explore new interests, and see the relevance of their education in the world beyond the school gates.

Years 1 and 2

In Years 1 and 2, we build on the strong foundations laid in Little Lochies and Reception, nurturing children’s growing independence and natural curiosity.

These years are a time of great cognitive and emotional development, and our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to harness this enthusiasm through meaningful, engaging, and purposeful learning experiences.

At the heart of our academic provision is the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), a globally respected, thematic and cross-curricular framework that encourages children to explore, enquire and connect ideas across subjects. The IPC allows us to teach key skills and knowledge through exciting, enquiry-based topics that are relevant and inspiring, promoting deeper understanding and retention.

Each half-termly unit begins with an Entry Point, a memorable experience designed to capture the children’s imagination and spark curiosity.  Through practical activities, group collaboration, independent exploration, and structured learning, pupils engage in a wide range of subjects including Science, Geography, History, Art, Design Technology, Health and Wellbeing, and International Understanding. Every unit concludes with an Exit Point, giving children the opportunity to consolidate, reflect on and celebrate their learning with peers, staff and parents.

The IPC also plays a significant role in developing international mindedness, helping our pupils appreciate different cultures, beliefs, and perspectives.  Through global themes and real-world issues, children begin to explore both the similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of others, laying the groundwork for empathy, open-mindedness and a strong sense of identity.

Daily sessions in Literacy and Maths provide structure and consistency. In Literacy, we continue to build essential skills in reading, phonics, writing and language development.  In Maths, the Singapore Maths approach supports mastery through problem solving, reasoning and deep conceptual understanding.

Our commitment to developing the whole child remains central. The Lochinver Learning Powers, from Collaboration to Originality, are embedded into daily routines, guiding pupils as they develop resilience, independence and confidence. These, together with our core values of Honesty, Kindness and Respect, provide the compass for our children’s decision-making and personal growth.

By the end of Year 2, our pupils are not only confident learners, but compassionate and curious individuals, ready to embrace the next stage of their educational journey with courage, creativity and a growing awareness of the world around them.
