ACADEMIC JOURNEY

At Lochinver House, we know that true academic growth happens in many forms. That is why our co-curricular programme is an essential part of each pupil’s academic journey. From coding clubs to debate teams, eco-initiatives to entrepreneurial challenges, pupils are encouraged to apply their learning in exciting and creative contexts.

These wider opportunities help children consolidate their skills, explore new interests, and see the relevance of their education in the world beyond the school gates.

Years 3 and 4

Children progressing into or joining Year 3 and 4 get to make those key next steps in their growing independence and enjoyment of new and exciting challenges.

In Years 3 and 4 whilst they continue to be taught in their classrooms for most of their lessons, they enjoy further specialist teaching and facilities for sport, art, music, drama, computing and digital learning, Design Technology, French, and Lab Science. Pupils in both year groups are placed in ability sets for Maths.

As the pupils enter Year 5, Lochinver House further independence and opportunities develop, in a model of learning more akin to a senior school.  Form Tutors are introduced and pupils are taught entirely by our team of subject specialist teachers.  The pupils visit their form rooms for registration and PSHEE, and pastoral support and move to subject-specific classrooms for lessons. Our curriculum is designed specifically to extend and enrich learning at all levels, and to prepare pupils for 11+ and 13+ entry to senior schools. With an eye on these important examinations, we add further curriculum time for English, maths and reasoning, yet without narrowing the broad curriculum offer provided.

With a high number of staff who have trained both in secondary and primary education, providing subject specialist teaching, we can provide unique teaching excellence that enables pupils to be continually stretch to achieve more than they thought possible.

Years 5 to 8

With even an even smaller teacher to pupil ratio in Years 5 to 8, we are able to adapt teaching to each individual’s needs and abilities, both through support and challenge.

Independent learning, self-discipline and taking responsibility are key, as is keeping a sense of fun, exploration, and discovery. Creativity is encouraged in the delivery of lessons and staff make full use of the latest technology to complement and enhance the pupils’ learning.

The result is the incredibly positive feedback we receive from senior schools receiving our Year 8 and Year 6 pupils.

Although not the route for all, those pupils who stay to Year 8, are given the time and careful nurturing input to ensure that they mature and develop in such a way that their transition to Year 9 for senior school is both seamless and advantageous in their ongoing development.

A large majority of our pupils stay until the end of Year 8, aided by strong preparations given to the 11+ deferred entrance assessments, and first-rate pastoral care.

They can easily recognise our Lochinver House pupils; their values (kindness, honesty and respect), maturity, and aptitudes enabling confidence, yet not arrogance.
